The FDI World Dental Federation is a federation of approximately 200 national dental associations and specialist groups. The organisation’s vision of “leading the world to optimal oral health” acknowledges that oral health is an integral part of general health and well-being.

The FDI World Dental Federation released a report Aug. 30 that outlines five strategies to address what the FDI describes as urgent oral health care challenges facing the dental profession and its patients worldwide.

Vision 2020

Shaping the future of oral health

 Challenges and opportunities

Vision 2020 provides a sketch of how oral health care might look by 2020 if the profession tackles the challenges and seizes the opportunities in a timely and appropriate manner. It answers the essential questions: how can the profession grow in order to make a significant contribution to the improvement of global oral health during the coming decade?

Five elements to Vision 2020

Vision 2020 comprises five chief elements, analyzed according
to threat and opportunity. The first is to meet the increasing
need and demand for oral healthcare; Second is to expand the role of healthcare professionals. The third element is to shape a responsive educational model, while the fourth is to mitigate the impacts of socio-economic dynamics. The final element is to foster fundamental and
translational research and technology.

Aspirational and inspirational

Vision 2020 is aspirational and inspirational; it is not meant to be operational. It provides avenues which will need to be further explored and discussed: specific strategies, tactical approaches, implementation tools or ready-to-use formulae, as those will depend largely on local needs and circumstances.

A continuous process

Vision 2020 is the beginning of a continuous process aimed at
generating discussion and collaboration between FDI and all
its partners. It is the result of a year-long reflection within FDI.

We would like to thank the Henry Schein Cares Foundation for donating dental kits towards our SE Asia Mission in September/October 2012. PHS was able to donate dental kits to all the children we provided oral health education to at Eden Family Home in Saigon, Vietnam, Loc Tho Charity School in Nha Trang, Vietnam and Home of Grace near Bati Lake, Cambodia. We were also able to sustain our new programs at each organization for 1 year. We couldn’t complete our missions without the help from our sponsors, donors and volunteers. A big BIG THANK YOU!

PHS worked with Eden Family Home (formerly Agape Children’s Home) in Saigon, Vietnam. The founders of this organization have raised many orphaned and underprivileged children as their own. We were happy to be reunited with the family we did our first mission with.

PHS co-founders personally donated towards emergency dental treatment for 2 of Eden Family Home’s children who were in pain. The children’s bravery and willingness without complaint was admirable.

In mid lesson we caught one of our new friends already mimicking the brushing technique we were teaching. (Blue uniforms are worn by all children at the school, the grey attire showcases children being brought up in the monastary.)

Spent the day with 2 women doing great things in Vietnam. Tina Nguyen, owner of Faifoo Boutique Hotel and supporter of many charity projects in Vietnam & Minh Huynh, a journalist for Tuoi Tre news and founder of Viet Horizon Club. Minh and Tina both joined us for our mission with Eden Family Home. Minh will be writing about Eden Family Home and PHS’s mission there! A big thank you to Tina and Minh for their support.

Loving Kindness Vietnam, an organization that directly aids those in need throughout Nha Trang, blogged about our visit to Loc Tho Charity School & Orphanage. To learn more about Loving Kindness Vietnam please visit lovingkindnessvietnam.org.

We can’t say enough about Home of Grace near Bati Lake in Cambodia. Founder, Neri Tran, is such an inspiration and we were so impressed with the organization and how well behaved the children are. We had a successful mission and look forward to continuing our program with Home of Grace.

Do you recognize this face? We found Nget, the little girl we met 3 years ago who is the face of PHS! Nget still resides a at Lighthouse Children’s Orphanage in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.
